This Felpham project is an existing two-storey home that has been constructed by the current owners’ father. Stickland Wright were instructed by the client to create a contemporary extension and internal alterations to modernise the building and adapt it for a growing family. The building is located a stone’s throw away from the beach with uninterrupted sea views.
Working closely with the clients’ we developed a brief ensuring we fully understood how the home would be used by the family, ensuring a natural flow and an abundance of light. The key requirement of the design was to create an upwards extension which would enhance the existing structure and take utmost advantage of the location and spectacular views of the channel, whilst being sympathetic to the environment and with minimal impact on the neighbouring homes.
An unusual feature of the building is that it was designed as an upside-down house with sleeping accommodation on the ground floor and partially open plan areas on the first floor, with a roof terrace connecting the interior to the garden. A new second-storey extension was designed to occupy the entire footprint of the structure below creating a very spacious master bedroom with a walk-in dresser and generous en-suite. Large apertures were also created on the southern elevation with bi-folding doors opening the bedroom onto the roof, connecting interior space with the outside and offering the perfect morning vista.
The existing internal layout required only a few alterations to be made to simplify the plan. An existing staircase that previously served the bedrooms on the ground floor has been demolished freeing up vital space that was allocated to open-plan living areas enhancing the sociable offering. The existing window openings on the southern side were also increased in size to offer even better views and flood the living areas with natural light.
The existing primary staircase was slightly altered to allow the creation of the new opening connecting to the existing sleeping accommodation on the ground floor. An existing storage room has been converted into a new TV room creating an almost separate accommodation to main house and offering the perfect escape from the bustle of family life.
