Heritage residential conversion in Sussex, featuring brick house, patio, and lawn. Stickland Wright Architecture and Interior Design

Heritage Residential Conversion, Sussex

A sensitive conversion with deep retrofit and extension.

Photography by James French

The Stickland Wright architect and interior design teams worked closely with the clients to convert this East Sussex public house into a residential dwelling. The brief requested a sensitive conversion of the historic building to form a warm and cosy home that makes the most of the countryside views.

Our team’s skills and knowledge in retrofit and low energy design provided a fabric first retrofit, using vapour open materials, improving air tightness and installing MVHR to provide well ventilated spaces. The design incorporated a glazed rear extension to maximise the views. The holistic approach to interior and architectural design has formed a coherent home.

From the client:

“Stickland Wright have certainly delivered on our aspirations for the conversion of a former pub into our new home. This complex project was undertaken with sensitivity, professionalism and care. It involved the complete repurposing of internal spaces, a modern extension, a deep retrofit so as to meet modern standards for energy efficiency, and internal design work throughout so as to create a comfortable home which celebrated the wonderful views from the site. Caroline, Anna and Sam quickly understood our priorities, both from an architectural and design point of view, and made appropriate judgements and recommendations. They also supported us through the complicated and technical elements of the project in a measured and systematic way. They absorbed the advice and guidance from the planners, meaning that our planning submission gained approval quickly and easily. As the project got underway, they demonstrated remarkable efficiency: nothing fell through the cracks, and all matters were followed up quickly and to a satisfactory resolution.

Whilst all projects of this nature come with a certain level of stress, we enjoyed working with Stickland Wright. Their impact can clearly be seen in the finished product, which combines respect for the history and tradition of the building with contemporary flair.”
