Woodland Home, Sussex

Reimagining and extending a 19th century bungalow

Understanding our client’s love for the setting of their home was key to our design solution for the upward extension of this Woodland home. This combined with recognition for the calm, generous and considered interiors they had already made.

This was already a special home; therefore our purpose was to augment and enhance this quality. We did this by matching the pattern of their daily lives with the rhythm of views and passage of the sun.

SERVICES PROVIDED

Stickland Wright’s design concept was inspired by the view looking up toward the existing building from the garden. The original single-storey structure lacked visual presence against the backdrop of tall, mature trees. We saw opportunity to provide compositional weight with a more commanding new storey.

Our SW+ service always ensures our design responses are pragmatic from a building viewpoint, even at concept stage. Here the size and location of the upward extension needed to work with retained existing structure, without need for costly intervention. Simple refined detailing allows the outside in.

Low-energy design was a key consideration from the outset. The home’s south-facing orientation presented an opportunity to integrate clever design solutions which mitigate overheating and add architectural character: slot windows, overhangs, recesses, and balconies were carefully incorporated.

“Stickland Wright took our nondescript, poorly converted, single storey building and turned it into a spectacular contemporary home.

We considered numerous architects but Nick Stickland was the one who we really felt totally understood our vision; a house filled with light and a sense of space, that made the most of its woodland setting. Not only did he take our ideas and make them manifest, he came up with some fabulous solutions to difficult spaces, that we could never have considered. He didn’t just create space and light, he created drama.  We could not have asked for more. We absolutely love our home and will always be grateful to Nick for helping create it.”
