Environmental, social, and governance

Stickland Wright have invested heavily in the research and development of low energy building techniques and broader sustainability objectives.

Our values place sustainability at the heart of our work, ensuring that our projects are low impact and that we remain conscious and responsible designers. As architects and designers, we are uniquely positioned to make a positive impact within the buildings, developments and places we create, designing for the future. ESG is intrinsic to our approach when designing new schemes; measuring the sustainability and social impact of what we create.

Environmental

We understand that good design can only be sustainable design. Stickland Wright are a proud member of Architects Declare, a network of professionals concerned about the concurrent threats of climate crisis and ecological collapse, and as such have sustainability principles at the heart of our practice.  The debate around environmentally responsible design and standards is rapidly evolving and we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of this conversation through research and development of design practices and product development. Importantly, Stickland Wright understand that the underlying principles of sustainable design run parallel to the integral characteristics of high-quality architecture and design.

Architects Declare

Stickland Wright are dedicated signatories of Architects Declare, a network of professionals concerned about the concurrent threats of climate crisis and ecological collapse, and as such have sustainability principles at the heart of our practice.  The debate around environmentally responsible design and standards is rapidly evolving and we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of this conversation through research and development of design practices and product development. Importantly, Stickland Wright understand that the underlying principles of sustainable design run parallel to the integral features of high-quality architecture and design.

These principles, such as robust detailing, use of natural light, and adoption of appropriate technology are common practice to the whole team and the application traverses our entire portfolio. We have substantial inhouse expertise on innovative low-energy design and seek out opportunities to work on deep green projects with clients. Our ephebic oath – ‘We will transmit this City not only not less, but greater, better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.’ Stickland Wright will continue to advocate for the highest standards and aspirations for a built environment that addresses the myriad challenges of our age.

Social

We aim to support local community action and endeavours, by gifting our time and skills to these causes. Currently we are actively assisting the following groups, on this basis:

  • More than Home CLT – seeking to deliver homes for vulnerable and disadvantaged young people.
  • Equal Footings (now partnered with Esteem.org.uk) – seeking to deliver employment opportunities, training and homes to vulnerable and disadvantaged young people. Nick Stickland is a founder trustee of Equal Footings.
  • Hove Civic Society – concepts for public realm improvements in Hove, to help sustain a safer, thriving and resilient neighbourhood.
  • St James Street Arch – assisting to create a new archway concept, to help encourage greater footfall into this part of Brighton. This is in a bid to boost local distinctiveness and support small traders.
  • Valley Gardens Forum – helping to articulate resident and local business concerns around significant highways alterations, to improve communications between all parties and create more inclusive solutions.
  • AGHAST – supporting a syndicate of local opposition groups to make their voice heard, in the face of a significant development with major impacts on the community of east Brighton.

At Stickland Wright we are always happy to support and amplify important and sometimes unheard voices within our community, so that there is a fairer weighting to their views. This is particularly true where we believe that these voices can help enrich the debate and create better and more resilient outcomes.

Closer to home, we are an equal opportunities employer and champion the distinct qualities and personalities within our team. We believe that if individuals are permitted to explore their passions, that we as a business will also be enriched and rewarded.
