Holiday Developments

Burnbake Holiday Lodges, Dorset: Twenty-two bespoke, low environmental impact lodges within a site of special scientific interest.

We were commissioned to create 22 bespoke lodges with a design led approach and with low environmental impact. This very special site in the Dorset Purbeck countryside is nestled in between multiple SSSI’s and with sensitive wildlife habitats. It was essential to tread lightly on this location and we had to prove this as part of a lengthy planning process.

Phase 1&2 of the project are now completed and opened. The lodges have been well received by local residents and businesses alike. We even have examples of locals coming to the lodges for a break! Local businesses have also benefited from the year round use of the site by tourists, previously limited to the summer fair weather period.

SERVICES PROVIDED

Stickland Wright created a new holiday lodge typology, which responded to the setting of this leafy glade, whilst being factory made. Off-site manufacture enabled the scheme to have very low impact on the existing landscape, which was a key factor in achieving planning success.

Our SW+ specialists we knew the natural environment required a light touch solution. We developed a new prototype cassette panel structure, which was created off-site and put together in days on site. SW+ is about technical know-how and collaboration.

Low energy design was a fundamental component of the brief, as was for year-round comfort and low running costs. On this off-grid site, we carefully balanced a fabric-first approach with energy efficient solutions to create a truly resilient and eco-conscious design.
