Seaside New Build, Isle of Wight

A sustainable new build capturing the views of the Solent.

We were fortunate enough to have been competitively selected for this lovely site in Gurnard on the Isle of Wight. Our clients wanted to create an exceptional replacement home which made the most of the orientation and views over the Solent.

The existing site is very steeply banked and so a house which cascades, in terraces, down the slope was envisaged. Each level would have its own character, use and associated external garden amenity.

Conceptually, the lower levels would be hewn out of the existing slope and be part of the landscape. They would form a solid plinth element using heavy textures and solid forms. By contrast the next level would be transparent, accommodating the principal reception areas and great views from generous terraces, front and back. Lastly, the bedrooms would float above the whole ensemble. This would be a carefully crafted jewellery box, balancing the privacy of the interiors whilst retaining framed views out.
