Beyond a “House Style”: The Benefits of Hiring an Interior Designer with a User-Centric Approach

Do we have a House Style? We get asked this often, and our answer is no. We take a user-centric approach: we work with each client to really understand aspirations and requirements. While many seek a specific “look,” we’re not about chasing trends or styles.

That’s not to say we don’t love a beautifully designed piece of furniture or a stylish light fixture, but our focus is deeper. We look at who will be using the space and how they’ll experience it emotionally. This is true for any space – home, workplace, or restaurant.

While hiring an Interior Designer for commercial spaces seems a more obvious requirement,  the value of using an Interior Designer for your home is often mis-understood. It is seen as a service reserved for the wealthy or a way of styling your home to respond to trend led aspirations. The goal of this post is to debunk these myths and highlight the real benefits of thoughtful residential design.

Your home as your sanctuary

We spend most of our time at home, especially in recent times where home working is part of many peoples working week. A home’s emotional needs are as important as its function, and our designs put your well-being at the forefront.

Interior Design at the start of the build process and not at the end

Interior design considerations for wellbeing ideally need happen at the very start of the design process as they consider natural light, connection to the outside, flow of spaces and adjacencies of activities. The clear benefit of working alongside the architecture team from the start is we can collaborate closely and incorporate interior considerations into the blueprint of the design. Where there are limitations to changing the building fabric and an architect is not required, there are still many ways an Interior designer can improve and affect the way you use and emotionally respond to the space.

Less is more

Interior design can sometimes be seen as pushing unnecessary purchases and trend led solutions. Our focus is on resourcefulness and simplicity. We love nothing better than to banish the clutter and create storage to calm the mind and allow the home to function well.

Design for longevity

Sometimes it’s worth spending more time and energy on something that is just right for your needs and will be a treasured part of your home. As designers we can help identify which aspects are worth the time and attention of a local skilled artisan. With this approach, you can avoid the wastefulness of trend led design which has a short aesthetic life span and may no longer serve a purpose – just one way in which we encourage sustainability in design.

Cohesion in Design

This principle leads back to our collaborative approach to the design process. A cohesive design brings balance and harmony to the interior. Creating a design blueprint ensures there is a seamless flow between spaces helping to connect the interior, architecture and external spaces and make the home feel united rather than choppy, as if one room belonged to another house. This balance can have a positive impact on mental health and can subconsciously allow us to feel calmer in the space. This may be achieved through a limited material palette, or a repetition of detail. If you are looking to implement changes over time and design room by room, then this is made far easier when the overall design direction or ‘bigger picture’ is in place to ensure the final home feels as one.

Multi Tasking Designs

Interior design often aims for that final ‘wow’ moment, but we think homes should have the ability to adapt and evolve: essential for long lasting interiors. Broken plan spaces that can flex between providing privacy and open plan layout are one way to respond to changing requirements. We always look to future proof designs where possible and look at ways spaces can be transient and fluid to cater for different functions over time.

So, while we don’t have a specific house style, we do follow a set of strong guiding principles aimed at delivering sustainable interior designs. Our approach ensures your home enhances your well-being and remains functional and beautiful both now and in the future.
